In memory of Joel Carothers

We are sad to learn of the passing this month of Joel Carothers, resident of New Mexico and formerly a Chicagoan. Our received knowledge is that Joel was one of the founding mothers of Artemis Singers back in 1980. If anyone knows more about Joel’s history with Artemis, we would welcome the information.*

Windy City Times has published a lovely remembrance of this lively and creative woman: http://www.windycitymediagroup.com/lgbt/PASSAGES-Joel-B-Carothers-dies/52485.html.

Our hearts go out to her partner Kate Winner and all of Joel’s family and friends.

*Update: we have gotten confirmation from one of our community Elders that indeed Joel was a founder of Artemis.

Sue introduces our second performance of Proud to be Me. At Beverly Unitarian Church

Our next new member night is Thursday, August 27. As member Allison reminded us, this date rhymes with “plenty of heaven.”

If you are a woman with Thursday nights free and you love to sing, consider joining us!

We currently rehearse on the northwest side of Chicago but are looking for possible other venues that are more accessible by CTA train lines (we are currently accessible by CTA bus and Metra). If you have a lead on a place, please let us know!

Please get in touch by using the Contact Us form and we will get back to you with more details.

A reason to celebrate!

Same-Sex Marriage in 50 States

On this historic day of #SCOTUSMarriage and #LoveIsLove, here are some wonderful lyrics from “Something Inside So Strong” by Labi Siffre:

The higher you build your barriers
The taller I become
The farther you take my rights away
The faster I will run
You can deny me
You can decide to turn your face away
No matter, cos there’s

Something inside so strong
I know that I can make it
Though you’re doing me wrong, so wrong
You thought that my pride was gone
Oh no, there’s something inside so strong
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Something inside so strong
