Chicago’s Lesbian Feminist Chorus since 1980
As a lesbian feminist organization, Artemis Singers sings in solidarity with all LGBTQ+ people and allies. Artemis comprises feminist singers from diverse backgrounds who are dedicated to performing music written or arranged by women, working to effect positive change in cultural attitudes toward women and women artists, and increasing the visibility of lesbian feminists.
Membership is open to adult women, nonbinary, and trans singers, regardless of musical background. No audition is required, but all singers must be able to sing in the soprano/alto range, match pitch, and carry a tune.
Our goal in selecting and performing music is to provide an emotionally moving, spiritually and aesthetically uplifting, and politically motivating experience to our audience. We aim to entertain, amuse, and educate; to highlight historical, political, and personal events and experiences common to women; and most of all, to share a sense of community with our audience.
We put on public concerts twice a year, and we also perform at private functions and fundraisers by invitation.
We are a self-directed chorus with no paid staff. Members who choose to direct with Artemis Singers may direct one or many songs, and we may have five or more different directors during any single performance. Our music is selected at meetings open to any member who chooses to participate. For each concert, we arrive at a theme and find a volunteer to serve as Artistic Director. Sometimes an Artistic Director candidate suggests her/their own theme, other times the theme comes first.
Artemis Singers is a 501(c)3 not for profit corporation. Contributions to our organization are tax deductible.
